How To Save Energy At Home

With energy prices rising, it’s even more important to strive for energy-efficient homes. Follow the simple tips below for energy conservation, a reduced carbon footprint and a lower electricity bill.

    • It’s key to have energy efficient appliances. Turning your appliances off of standby mode and actually switching them off at the plug, could save you around £65 a year on electricity. It may even be worth considering investing in smart plugs. Smart plugs are affordable and easy to use home devices. They allow you to control your wired appliances (with an on/off switch) on your phone or with voice command.

    • As we ease into autumn, the weather is certainly getting colder. Therefore, it’s important to conserve as much heat in your home as possible. Draught proofing your home will prevent any heat loss around doors, windows and any gaps.

    • It’s easy to save energy used by lights. Simply, turn off any lights not in use and switch them off as soon as you leave the room. I also recommend looking into LED bulbs. LED bulbs use more than 75% less energy than incandescent lighting.

    • A small but efficient change you can make is washing your clothes at a lower temperature. Washing your clothes at 30 degrees is generally very effective and saves up to 60% energy.

    • On the topic of washing, I highly recommend swapping a bath for a shower. Simply swapping one bath per week for a four minute shower, can save you £20 a year on hot water. It goes without saying, the quicker you shower the lower the cost! Although the acoustics might not be as good, you’ll save money by belting out tunes in your room rather than in the shower.

If you don't have a smart meter, you'll need to frequently provide readings to your energy company. This will ensure that you are only paying for what you have actually used. If you ever feel like there's something wrong with your energy bill, always get in touch with your provider sooner rather than later.
